Who Should Attend:

Windows system or domain administrators or support staff who want to learn how to integrate Powershell into daily basic and advanced tasks. (Previous experience with any scripting or programming language will enhance the attendee's experience, but is not required.)

Course Overview:

The class will cover the following topics:

  • Basic PS fundamentals such as objects, cmdlets, and namespaces
  • User, group, and workstation AD administration (local and remote)
  • Using PS to manipulate the registry, certificate stores, and file systems
  • Custom objects for reports and tasks
  • Custom cmdlets for frequent and or interactive tasks

What to Bring to Class:

Each attendee is to bring a laptop to the class.

This environment should be treated as a hostile computing environment. Do not bring your production laptop! Students will be performing remote administration functions against other class members' workstations using PowerShell, including security-related changes. Do not bring a workstation that contains sensitive or privileged information!

Your laptop should meet the following requirements:

  • Physical or Virtual Windows 7 or higher. No Windows Vista. If a virtual machine, please verify the virtual machine can acquire a DHCP address on your network.
  • Attendee must have full local administrator privileges and be able to perform the following: allow UAC requests; join and disjoin a Windows 2008 domain in class; rename the workstation and other computer properties; and completely disable the Windows Firewall

  • Powershell 3.0 or higher and the Powershell ISE

  • AD Powershell Module activated; requires Windows Remote Server Administration tools (see this link: http://goo.gl/6FrIqD)

  • Spreadsheet application capable of loading CSV files

Make sure your laptop is fully tested prior to arrival as we have limited time for troubleshooting compatibility issues.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch, as well as morning and afternoon breaks, will be provided.
